Not 100% sure who this rider is but it looks a lot like Gerry “Popout’ Manion, he’s definitely screaming off the bottom on a size-able Point day in the 90’s.

June 11th 2011 at Club Cronulla (RSL) there’s a reunion for all the old Point crew. The last get together 6 years back around 80 turned up and organisers are hoping for even more. Below is Gerry “Popout” Manion racing the barrel on a mid size day out The Point early 80’s Photo by Chris Stroh

Gerry “Popout” Manion’s performances on big days at The Point were the talk of the town in the late 70’s. Popout was an animal when it came to taking the biggest and heaviest sets. Not sure where the name Popout came from but in the early 70’s the first cheap mass produced machine moulded surfboards appeared on the surfing scene and they were called Popouts, maybe there’s a connection. This shot was taken in the early 80’s on his Waterforce gun typified his steely determined approach to riding Second Reef. Pic Chris Stroh.

Gerry “Popout” Manion during the seventies was one of the first to really take on maxing Cronulla Point. Gerry was renown for scoring the biggest and best barrel of the day a feat he achieved when he lucked into that killer keg that put Cronulla on the big wave map when magazines around the world including a poster in Surfing Mag ran it. Popouts other interests included racing cars. The full adrenalin freak. This framie was captured early 90’s.
