Surf Mats

November 1976. Long before body boards hit the scene, matt riders were already investigating the potential.   Steve Downy was a fearless matt rider,  but this shot is of Dave Shaw spinning around for a late takeoff.  Tim Vanderlaan photo.

Dave Shaw and Geoff Doig

If I remember correctly, Dave took this shot at Shark Island of Geoff Doig using his new custom built water housing. It was a vast improvement and up grade on the Nikonos he was renoun for uing in the past. A short time after this shot was captured Dave had his new rig ripped from his hand during a shoot and it was never seen again.

Talented 70’s photographer Dave Shaw shooting at Cronulla Point using a Century 650mm

Night Surfing

Dave Shaw ’86

Dave Shaw best known for his water photgraphy throughout the 70’s was also an accomplished waterman whether bodysurfing, mat riding or  boogie boarding. On the biggest Point days Dave was deep amongst it with the rest of the Point heirachy. This shot from the pages of Tracks Nov 86, taking the drop at 2nd Reef by Stroh.

Point Bazza

An allround talent in the 70’s. When Dave Shaw  wasn’t charging on his Mat on solid days at The Point he was out there in the lineup capturing some incredible photo images, some of the best water shots from that era. Pic of Dave by Simo.

This Dave Shaw pic of Geoff Doig turned up on the front cover of Surfing Magazine 1979. The same issue features an article on Cronulla Point with shots of Gary Hughes, Greg Melhuish and Les Martin all getting barrelled.
