As a grom Ash showed real potential competing with EBC until he changed course and foccussed on his reef surfing skills. During the 80s he gained a rep as one of the best underground chargers in Cronulla. This pic surfing at the time  one of the last uncrowded spots in the Nulla mid 80s photo Chris Stroh

When this adv. shot was taken of Ash he was a rising star usually found battling out with his main rivals like Glenn Pringle,  Alby Ross and Richard “Dog”Marsh in the local amateur division. Ash was a gifted natural surfer and once he tired of the comp routine he had developed into one of the areas top reef chargers. Still going strong today. Late 80’s Ashley Gee  was a regular fixture in the lineup every time Shark Island began to rumble. He was on it each new swell and always a candidate  to  pick  up the wave of the day. This shot,  Ash finds the zone with the picture  featured in a Surfing Life article photographed by Chris Stroh.

I think this was the first time I swam out to this semi secret spot in Cronulla. It was a heavily overcast day,  there was a crew of hot local names out and the waves were firing. It was a memorable session even though it was a bit spooky being so far from shore. Ashley Gee below picked off a smaller insider below but got shacked all  the same.
