Craig Naylor ’80

Craig Naylor used to live downstairs from me in Burke rd so I often managed to hook up a shoot whenever he was heading out. On this day it was only small but Craig was making it look better that it was, this stylish MR turn must have been shot around 1980 at The Alley. Photo Stroh

This is what The Alley looked like at North Cronulla back in the 70’s when you could still drive right up to the path and check the waves, no one out rare. Photo Chris Stroh

Classic shot taken by John Veage featuring many of  the Alley Boys currently on show at the Mall Wall Museum in Cronulla. The likes of Bluey, Greg Macca, Jack Eden, Veage and others have made a montage of retro images covering old and new pics, well worth a look next time your cruising Cronulla Mall.

Old Joes Milkbar

Posted: January 30, 2011 at 5:34 pm

Old Joes Milkbar was for a longtime a major part of Cronulla history. Situated right on the beach at Northies it was the hang for all the crew. Run by Joe and Thelma it had old Nat surf posters and ancient Tab Cola advertisements hanging up on fly stained walls. Out dated penny arcade machines alongside newer style pinballs, it was sad to see it go along with the Workers Club next door. Image by Chris Stroh

Dave “Evo” Evans

Dave Evans showed real potential as a grom, he looked like he was set to follow a career as a pro surfer . Growing up with the Alley Boys he gained a reputation as a hell grommet and somewhere along the line he switched his surfboard for a skateboard. During the mid 80’s Evo became one of the highest profile skaters in Aus.Vert or street Evo tore up the terrain. Jamie McMillan

Jamie was one of The Alley Boys hell grommet squad during the 80’s. Hanging out with the likes of Evo, Wilbur, Patch and Fitzy these kids were usually on a mission of terror, fun and mischief. Jamie was more into the beach lifestyle than he was worried about contest singlets. In the coming years he would travel the globe snow boarding and surfing and eventually write about his adventures in a book. He is also an accomplished artist now living in Byron Bay. Fanga

Barry “Fanga” Tyte is a talented goofyfooter who is treated with plenty of respect down at The Alley. Fanga has been a dominant part of the Cronulla Boardriders Club since the earliest days. He was Open Club Champion in ’81  and over the next few years he was regularily involved in a 3 way tussle with Craig Naylor and Ross Marshall for top honors. Fanga was renown for disappearing to a  secret left reef long before word spread about its hollow barrels and got crowded. Fanga had it to himself for years. This pic of Fanga was from an article on Cronulla Boardriders Club in Tracks in ’83 taken by Peter Simmons.

featured in Peak advertisements around the sametime.
