The Rip Bowl at The Alley is one of the most consistent banks in Cronulla, at times it can resemble a mini North Narrabeen due to the amount of competitiveness in the water. During the mid 80’s rarely a day would pass that Sean Charters wasn’t out there dominating the lineup. Photo Chris Stroh taken around mid 80’s.

November 2011 was a time of great sorrow. Former Kurnell kid Brett Shweickle better known as Beaver sadly passed away. One of Occy’s buddies Beaver grew up with the Kurnell crew surfing the Point as well as competing for CBC in the 80’s. Beaver was another of the popular hometown heroes who up to only a few months ago was diganosed with cancer . A huge turnout of friends including Richard Maurer, Camo, Veage, Darcy and Occy had a paddle-out at Kurnell for their mate where his ashes were sent a drift as he requested. He will be forever missed by his many friends and deepest condolences to his wife and kids. This shot of Beaver at The Island was taken early 90’s by Chris Stroh.

Late 70s and early 80’s Ross Marshall was king of the beach breaks between the Alley and Wanda. With a clean unforced style he took his high performance act to the rest of Australia and was a dominant force in the State and Aussie titles helping to put Cronulla on the map after a long competitive drought. Every Beach has its main men who have earnt the respect of their peers over the years. Narrabeen had Simon Anderson, Pipe had Gerry Lopez at The Alley it was the late “Nugget” Dennehy who ruled the roost in and out of the surf. Someone smart once said, “Nugget would be world champ if only they held all the comps out at The Alley”. Nugget backside pivot photo by Chris Stroh late 80’s
