May 1979 Peter Britton. Kneeboraders had the ability to take off late and therefore could be way inside of the stand ups, however the punishment at the end of this wave was severe. Tim Vanderlaan photos.83-5

Matt “Sparky” Clarke

June 1995 Shark Island, Sparky was a regular Island surfer in the 90’s.  This day must have been overcast and therefore had to be shot in Black & White 400asa film. The colour slide film of that time was Kodak 64asa or at best Fuji 100asa, and therefore unsuitable to freeze the action in low light. It was a  far cry from todays digital cameras where you can still get a great shot in almost dark conditions using 6400 ISO .Tim Vanderlaan Photo

May 1979. Back when this photo was taken of Peter Britton , a core crew of kneeboards rode the island with the same fearless abandon just as the modern day bodyboards do these days. Tim Vanderlaan Photo
