During the 80’s water pollution at Sydney beaches was a serious health issue due to the ocean outfalls pumping raw sewerage into the sea. Whenever a Northeaster hit Cronulla became toxic. Someone once said,”You can shit one in the morning and surf with it later in the day”. The Poo March was an organised protest that gathered together, Tree Huggers , Surfers, ecologists and anyone who wanted the ocean cleaned up. It became an annual event for a while with protesters marching along the Cronulla beach front and earning a lot of negative publicity for the Goverment.

The Animal bar down stairs where the bikers once hanged and Saturday arvos was a chickifest on the balcony. Tim Bonython used to show his 8mm surf movies on the projector and being slightly drunk didn’t mean instant ejection. Those were the days. Pic Stroh

Grigsy loves Voodoo and if he’s not travelling around the globe or up and down the coast he rarely misses a session. This backside blast was snapped sometime around the late 90’s by Craig Stroh.

Gooch is one of those natural talented surfers who could have taken his surfing much further had he wanted to. In ’91 he was EBC Club champion then in ’92 and ’95 he was CBC Open Champ. Also in ’91 Gooch entered the history books winning the Alley Masters event. Instead of chasing the Pro dream Gooch saved his best for his free surfing sessions along the beachies at home. Today Gooch is still ripping just as hard as always. Water angle photo Craig Stroh late 90’s.
