Located on the hill near Wanda the Top Shop has long been apart of Cronulla surfing history. The local hang for generations of surfers filling up on burgers and chips and milkshakes between sessions. Still powering today.

Boat Harbour

Posted: May 29, 2011 at 2:45 pm

This shot of Boat Harbour was taken in the early 90’s. The huts originally were built in the depression days of the 30’s when squatters took refuge in the dunes to live off the land and ocean.Years later the original families were given a 100 year lease  before the land is meant to be handed back. Having a friend or relo who owned a hut was always a bonus for the surfers who ventured out to the nearby reefs and beachies. Image Stroh files.

Poo March

Posted: January 28, 2011 at 9:32 am

During the 80’s water pollution at Sydney beaches was a serious health issue due to the ocean outfalls pumping raw sewerage into the sea. Whenever a Northeaster hit Cronulla became toxic. Someone once said,”You can shit one in the morning and surf with it later in the day”. The Poo March was an organised protest that gathered together, Tree Huggers , Surfers, ecologists and anyone who wanted the ocean cleaned up. It became an annual event for  a while with protesters marching along the Cronulla beach front and earning a lot of negative publicity for the Goverment.

Northies Pub.

Posted: January 14, 2011 at 12:14 pm

The old Northies pub was a Cronulla Institution.Friday and Saturday nights it was fight night out on the street at closing time. The Animal bar down stairs where the bikers once hanged and Saturday arvos was a chickifest on the balcony. Tim Bonython used to show his 8mm surf movies on the projector and being slightly drunk didn’t mean instant ejection. Those were the days. Pic Stroh
