Dog Cover

Posted: October 29, 2010 at 12:57 pm

Richard “Dog” Marsh has had his fair share of covers over the years. This one generated from a Blackrock session appeared on the Waves poster book.Richard was going through his punk rock stage and had dyed his hair black. Dog along with the other Cronulla goofys like Pete Smith, Greeny and  Occy  would always head south the first sign of a southerly swell and a sniff of north east wind. This day was near good as it gets and Dog was in the box seat.  Circa early 90’s  photo Chris Stroh

Matt Griggs

Posted: October 27, 2010 at 4:08 pm

This pic of Grigsy was taken around the latter part of the  90’s at Suckrock when he was a rising star. He was competing around the world and making a name for himself. He has since become a man of many talents. Working as a writer for Tracks, a best selling book, coaching for Rip Curl and now a motivation speaker. Matt is a health freak and still loves charging and towing in on those big days. More recently he has been coaching some of Cronullas latest surfing prospects including Jesse Horner, Dane Long, Rory Jenkins, Rachel Campbell and Dylan Haylar.   pic CSP

Sparky

Posted: October 25, 2010 at 3:00 pm

Matt “Sparky” Clarke is well known around Cronulla for his fearless big wave charging. The frame grab below of a warping Island monster was from the 90’s video Square by Craig Stroh and  featured on the cover. Sparky also survived a horrendous wipeout in Hawaii once when along with Rusty they paddled out past Sunset to a Cloudbreak on a maxing 25ft plus day. Another surfer drowned when the trio got caught inside. Sparky and Rusty survived the impact and made it back to shore on one board. Prior to them paddling out the pair asked if I would like to paddle out and photograph the session with them. No thanks.

Speg Cover

The years 1996 and  “Dave ‘Speg” McKinnley scores the cover of Underground Surf Mag Summer issue. The caption reads Evil Reef  Sux even though it looks suspiciously like the Island. The issue also has a 8 page feature with quotes from all the regular Island crew and plenty of piccies.  photo by Robert Walsh.

Boogs And Square.

Posted: October 13, 2010 at 6:02 pm

Early 90’s Craig Stroh produced a short film featuring Shark Island called Square. It featured this unbelievable backside pit of Boogs pig dogging a monster cave at The Point. The footage was shot by Jamin Mclean who had to be rescued a short time later after getting caught in the rip that was running like Niagara Falls across the rocks. The frame grabs are part of Boogs wild ride. As for Square it came out on VHS and can only be found on junk heaps and cleanups or covered in dust in the back of cupboards. Footage from all the old Stroh vids of the 90’s will become available again in the near future on this site and the new Cronulla DVD coming called “2′ will include some retro footage as well.

Occys comeback

Posted: October 3, 2010 at 9:39 am

Around the mid 90’s Occy came out of retirement after a period in hibernation. After piling on the kilos he climbed back on his roach approach thruster and started his climb back up to the top of surfings pro ranks. This shot was snapped down at Garie during a secret session, the extra weight that he was carrying sure didn’t slow him down.
