Rusty Moran in the 90’s was a dedicated Christian surfer who used to regularily take risks that many other riders would not dream about. Like surfing massive Cloudbreaks in Hawaii and paddling out to 20ft plus Waimea on your first trip aged 17 or night surfing on full moons. When Rusty hooked up with photographer Jon Frank it was a match made in heaven as Franky is just as crazy as Rusty when it comes to pushing boundaries. Photo Frank Circa 90’s.

Dave “Speg” Mckinley recently was spotted out The Island in June 2012 scoring one of the best days in recent years. In the 90’s Speg and his brother Ox along with Jezza, Sparky, Harey, Grub,Terapai, Boogs and Rusty where the Island standouts. Speg returned to the Island after several years in hibernation this swell and proved he still has what it takes to pull in and make it at Cronulla’s infamous reef. Gerry “Popout”Manion is the everready of Cronulla surfing as he just keeps going. In the 70’s he put Cronulla Point, Shark Island and himself on the surfing map. In the 80’s he continued to charge on the biggest days and his image pulling in to some crazy pits earned admirers from coast to coast . This shot was taken early 90’s and now its 2012, Popout is still out there pulling in as he was spotted surfing The Point on the last big swell. Photo Stroh.

Cronulla has lost several talented surfers long before their time. Names like Bobby Brown, Andrew Murphy, Geoff Solness and Troy Dennehy are just a few who have left their mark etched deep in Cronulla surf history and hearts. At The Alley at Northies, Nugget is still so revered that his name appears from time to time on graffiti around the beach. This shot was taken at The Wall of Nugget around 1990 by Chris Stroh.

Years honing his skills on Cronulla’s heavy reefs and a natural love of ocean power made RustyMoran’s transition to Hawaii’s Northshore a natural progression. Below Rusty tunnel time at Backdoor. Photo Around January ’94 by Chris Stroh

Matt “Sparky”Clarke out manoeuvres a warping Shark Island wall. This is the first shot John Frank had published. This was in tandem with another shot of Steve Austin. It was published in Tracks, same day swell (winter 92 tracks issue).

Boogs was one of Rusty, Sparky and Jeremy Hrbacs big wave sparring partners. It was always a contest to see how far these guys could push themselves in the ocean.Throughout the 90’s when the swell was pumping they would be out there on the horizon chasing the craziest waves they could find. Below Boogs slotted on his backside at Suckrock, photo Stroh.

Most photos you see of Rusty Moran he is going right. On a good sized day at Pipe in Hawaii while trying to pick off the bombs at Backdoor Rusty found himself in perfect position to snavel an inside Bansaii barrel from the hungry pack, Photo Stroh taken around winter 94/95
