Around 87 Occy lucked into a solid uncrowded session at The Island. This shot captured the Occster stalling on his backside, most other surfers would have been high tailing it out of this section at Whiterock. Photo Chris Stroh

Having an older brother named Rod who surfed and shaped surfboards probably had a lot to do with Mel Katis taking up surfing and competing with EBC. Throughout the 80’s young Mel was one of the best girl riders in the Cronulla area. Melisa went onto to fashion design and for a time was involved heavily with Quiksilver. Peter Van Ryan alias Twiggy was a regular face around the beaches of Cronulla throughout the 80’s. At the time Twiggy was also one of the original members of the notorious ” Bat Cave” on Elouera rd. These days he’s relocated on the Goldy and still ripping. This photo late 80’s surfing in a EBC comp at the Dunny’s photo Stroh
