When Occy won the Pro Junior contest at Narrabeen it was a forgone conclusion. He had already made a huge impact on the ASP World Tour with one of the most spectacular debut performances at the Straight Talk at Cronulla. Winning the most prestigious Junior comp in the world was the start of his rise to the top. Photo Stroh Circa mid 80s.

I think this was the first time I swam out to this semi secret spot in Cronulla. It was a heavily overcast day, there was a crew of hot local names out and the waves were firing. It was a memorable session even though it was a bit spooky being so far from shore. Ashley Gee below picked off a smaller insider below but got shacked all the same. Voodoo hasn’t changed all that much since ’86. The water was more polluted back then due to the sewerage outlet but the waves were just as good. I remember a Mark Warren 80’s surf report for Triple M once he was referring to spots like Voodoo when he said “You can drop a crap in the morning and meet back up again in the lineup in the afternoon”.

Late 70s and early 80’s Ross Marshall was king of the beach breaks between the Alley and Wanda. With a clean unforced style he took his high performance act to the rest of Australia and was a dominant force in the State and Aussie titles helping to put Cronulla on the map after a long competitive drought.
