Young Doggy back in his Daniel Surfboard days looking very determined to make this heavy local reef dredger as it jacks up and drains the reef nearly dry. Dog used similar determination to reach the top ranks of Pro Surfing throughout the late 80’s and 90s as a regular Top 16 finnisher. Photo Chris Stroh around ’85.

This shot of Gary Green is part of well over a 1000 or more B/W negative photos I discovered recently in a box tucked away in the garage that Id forgotten all about. Theres plenty of unseen shots of Occy, Murph, Mackie,Pringle and the rest of the 80’s crew that will be featured in the coming months. This snap of Gary shows the clean style that took him right to the top of pro surfing back in the day. Words and image by Chris Stroh

On those rare big cyclone north swells the outside left that breaks in line with the Rockpools and South Cronulla can produce some heart in your mouth drops. The Voodoo express rip is running at full speed on these days and will suck you towards the horizon if you let it. This shot taken in the early 80’s shows an unknown thrill seeker using a Hawaiian sized gun or Clubbie board to paddle into the maxed out swells. Photo Chris Stroh

Phil “Jughead”Carey rarely ever missed a day surfing at Elouera in the 80’s. Rain , hail or shine and no matter how big or small Jughead was always in the lineup usually scoring the wave of the day.Glenn Pringle names Jughead as one of his earliest surfing heroes growing up. When Mick was a Cronulla boy he was best known for his classy tube riding and flowing style out at reefs like The Island and The Point. Back in the mid 80’s on the beachies he could mix up his moves with the best of them.Photo Stroh

No wonder Cronulla surfers are so proud of their waves. We have some of the best reefs on the East Coast that produce all shape and size conditions. This spot was the full secret spot when this shot of Dog was snapped around mid 80s riding his Daniel Surfboard and Peak Wetty, photo Chris Stroh.
