Rod Katis

Posted: July 9, 2012 at 4:44 pm

Kat was one of EBC’s main clubmen  in the 80’s. When he wasn’t shaping boards at G&S under the Katzap label he was always influencing the groms at Elouera with his surfing and positive attitude. Glen Pringle names Kat as the most influential member of the club ever. This shot taken at Elouera early 80s by Stroh.

Occy and Peak Wetsuits

Posted: June 30, 2012 at 7:59 pm

Occy’s rise to power in the early years of his career was helped along considerably by his sponsor Peak Wetsuits. Peak snavelled up Mark  as a grom and it was only when the Raging Bull signed 100% with Billabong that the two parted company. This shot taken by Peter Simons was snapped at Wanda Beach around the mid 80’s.

Gary Green  has the prestige of having  his name in print along with the elite of surfing’s hierarchy in Matt Warshaws Encyclopedia of Surfing. It states Greeny was born in 1963 and raised in a $30.00 a week flat in western Sydney before moving to Newport at age 14.Three years later he moved to Cronulla.  He joined the Pro Tour in ’84. Midway through the 1987 tour year when he was ranked in 6th position he bailed on contest surfing and became one of the first non competitive pros who was paid to travel instead. Glenn made his debut on video in Tim Bonythons video “Strike Force”. The film featured all the current Piping Hot team. This day Glenn and I headed over to Narrabeen to meet up and shoot footage with Tim. The waves were cracking and the shot below was from a 4 shot seq. Photo Chris Stroh mid 80’s.

Another one of the Kurnell boys before he headed north to Queensland. As the older brother of Richard Dog Marsh, Jason was a role model for his young sibling and in coming years acted as a sometime coach/manager helping to  keep his younger sibling on the right path. This shot  taken at Blackrock photo Stroh around the mid 80’s.

Jim Banks.

Banksy was the first goofy foot surfer to lead the pack at Cronulla Point in the late 70’s. Jimbo took off just as deep, pulled in and made the tubes on the biggest gnarliest days as consistently as any of the front side stars. This shot Big Jim scoops off the bottom on his custom shaped Gun Club rhino chaser as he waits for the barrel section to form. Photo Chris Stroh Circa 80’s.
