Every 5 to 10 years a new crew of underground chargers seem to surface and rise to the challenge. In the mid to late 80’s it was Grub Coulter, Chris Iredale, Richard James, Mark Ryan,Kev Cassidy,Michael Mackie and several others who took on Shark Island with a fearless one foot in the grave approach. At the time The Island was still regarded as the heaviest barrel in Australia. This day Grub was notching up some hell pits. Photo Chris Stroh.

Stuart Gooch

Posted: September 14, 2012 at 7:47 pm

In the late 80’s and 90’s red hot ripper Stuart Gooch was one of the most underrated surfers in Australia but suffered the same Southside curse like many other talented riders. While the locals of Cronulla knew he had the talent and moves, just like Murf and Nugget before him he never received the necessary sponsor backing or exposure to take it to the next level. A classy surfer all the same. This lip destroyer taken at Elouera around ’89. Seq Chris Stroh.

When this adv. shot was taken of Ash he was a rising star usually found battling out with his main rivals like Glenn Pringle,  Alby Ross and Richard “Dog”Marsh in the local amateur division. Ash was a gifted natural surfer and once he tired of the comp routine he had developed into one of the areas top reef chargers. Still going strong today.
