This shot of traveller/shaper extraordinaire Wayne Roach with some of his handiwork was taken at Sandshoes in ’82 from his own photo collection.

Photographer Dave Shaw had a reputation as one of Australia’s best water photographers when he snapped this epic photo of Gary Hughes in the early 80’s at Shark Island. Both Dave and Hughsey were at the peak of their performances.

Old Joes Milkbar at North Cronulla probably Cronulla Beach’s most best remembered landmark and Old Joe himself.

In the 80’s Chris Iredale was at the peak of his surfing powers and he was especially at his best at getting barreled at Shark Island on the biggest and heaviest days. Back then the scores of boogies were far and few and Chris had his big wave line down and made the deadly slabs look easy to make. Anyone who has surfed the Island when its slabbing knows how difficult it is to ride this wave. Chris had it mastered. Photo Tim Vanderlaan.

Tim Vanderlaan is well known around Cronulla for his innovative camera skills and ability on a Mal. Tim began experimenting with homemade camera board built housings in the 80’s here he explains the process.’
“My early 1980’s board cam attempts (pre go pro days) A heavy camera with motor drive, in a even bigger water housing & bolted to the nose of the board, activated by a wire running the length of the board, coiled around the leggie, thro my wettie into a switch in my hand… most times the wire would break as the wire wouldn’t stretch enough with the leg rope resulting in an electrical “short”, a wasted roll of film and being continually zapped by the broken “shorted” wire all the way back to the beach”. Below 2 self portraits using the camera board.

If I remember correctly, Dave took this shot at Shark Island of Geoff Doig using his new custom built water housing. It was a vast improvement and up grade on the Nikonos he was renoun for uing in the past. A short time after this shot was captured Dave had his new rig ripped from his hand during a shoot and it was never seen again.

This photo was part of the Surfing World photo Annual called Road Song featuring Ross Marshall and Craig Naylor at Blackrock. It was a huge kick for the pair of Midway lads who’s profile blew up after the issue came out.

When the big pro comps came to Cronulla during the 80’s Bikini parades were usually on the agenda and local brand Benz Bikinis featured heavily. Think this was at one of the Beaurapaire event around 85 photo Chris Stroh
