Jim Banks SI

Jim Banks was one of the first to take on Shark Islands notorious reef waves on his backside. In the late 70’s the Island was looked on as one of the heaviest waves in the world and Banksy proved the shallow reef could be ridden backside just as successfully as the natural foots. The classic shot of Jimbo appeared in Steve Cores “Surf” Magazine around ’77 taken by Cronulla water photographer legend Dave Shaw.

Ross Longbottom

Longtime glasser at Gordon and Smith Surfboards before heading south, Ross was also one of the Sandshoes crew throughout the 70’s. This photo was taken by Steve Core and appeared in the pages of Surfing World. Circa 70’s.

Dave Mattison

Part owner of  Jackson Surfboards, Dave Mattison was a standout surfer on his own right. Tim Vanderlaan captured this photo at Wanda late 70’s.

Gerry Manyon

In the mid to late 70’s Cronulla Point was being compared to Sunset Beach in Hawaii thanks to the numerous shots that began turning up in mags of the incredible tubes on offer. This pic of Gerry Manyon appeared in Steve Cores magazine called “Surf” it was just one of the hardcore images that put Cronulla on the surf spot radar…photo Dave Shaw.

Tim Vanderlaan

Tim Vanderlaan grew up on the hill at Wanda overlooking the beach in the family home. An accomplished Mal rider he took up Surf photography around the mid 70’s which resulted  in many of his Cronulla  images appearing in magazines over the past decades. This photo taken by Tim of an empty Shark Island wave was his first published photo in Surfing World.

Greg Hourigan
