This  shot of Greg Melhuish a well respected  surferand  shaper for G&S appeared on the cover of Surfing World Vol 25 No5 taken at The Point by Greg Button in 1977. Butto was a regular out the Point and Island charging on his kneelo but always found the time to snap off some deep action water shots around this time. Butto along with Dave Shaw in the 70’s  put Cronulla on the surfing map as well as introduce many of The Shires top waves and riders to outside of the area.

Shark Island Warp.

Posted: July 11, 2011 at 10:13 am

When photos first started appearing in magazines of Shark Island it quickly gained a reputation as the heaviest wave in Australia. It was all because of its unpredictability and tendency to warp, bend and buckle as the wave hit the reef. The uniqueness guaranteed that no two waves were ever going to look the same. The Island may have been knocked off its heaviest wave title more recently but those warping barrels are still doing there thing today. Dredging empty Photo ’77 by Chris Stroh

Ralph Rotten

Posted: July 3, 2011 at 11:32 am

Rolf Myers earned the title “Ralph Rotten” in the 70’s due to his heavy handed diplomacy towards outsiders surfing The Point. Many non locals came out second best with The Points heaviest of heavies and tales of his regulating the lineup still do the rounds today. Ralph could clear the break when he paddled out and was known to paddle over the top or run down anyone who got in his way. Rolf set up Waterforce Surfboards in the 80’s. This shot is of Rolf surfing the Island around ’78 photo Stroh.
