In the mid 70’s Peter Townend was a semi-resident spending much of his time surfing Pirates Cove which looks suspiciously a lot like Sandshoes The pink board era.Photo Steve Core.

The Jannali Boys, Ian and brother Donny Revell were regulars in the 70’s at The Island on those big ugly monster days. Ian has some Super 8 footage of the Island from back then that we would love to get hold of. This shot was taken during that famous day when Soulman scored the double spread in Nats History of Surfing book wearing the red steamer. This pic Ian rides the foamball photo Stroh

Gordon and Smith Surfboards with Peter Townend unleashed the Bonza in the mid to later 70’s. The 3 fin concave design was the predecessor to the thruster and built to combat the twin fin but maintain the advantage of a single fin.

Peter Townend the Surfing worlds first tour champion in ’76 called Cronulla home for several years in the 70’s. With his board sponsor G&S at Taren Point, PT had a big influence over the local groms. Not only was he one of the first to break away from the standard white boards and black wetties he also inspired goatee beards to be grown by surfers everywhere. This adv Circa 70’s.

Reno was a bit of a character in the Sandshoes lineup, hanging out with the likes of Mick Anastas, Syd Cassidy, Steve Core, Ross Longbottom and PT’ throughout the 70’s . When Reno was around his larger than life presence was always noted. Pic of Reno at Sandshoes by Peter Simons.

Kneeboard shaper Peter Britton was a regular out The Point and Island throughout the 70’s when he wasn’t in the factory mowing foam. This shot by Dave Shaw captures the explosion as the lip hits the reef.
