Christian Surfers

The Christian Surfers board club first appeared in 1977 in Cronulla and was the brainchild of Bret Davis. Bret saw the need to improve the image of surfers plus create a club for members of his fellowship. Bret has written a book called Ground Swell that covers the history of the club and it will be released for this Xmas. Gary Hughes

Gary Hughes ’76

In ’76 Gary Hughes was the rising star of Cronulla surfing. This Saltwater adv. appeared on the back page of Steve Cores first issue of Surf Magazine taken by Steve.

 

Rob McLaggen Logo

Rob was one of the talented kneeboarder chargers who surfed The Point and Island in the 70’s as well as produce custom kneeboards.

Dean Hughes

Dean was one of The Point crew of the 70’s, back when surfing The Point was special and there was a Strong camaraderie and respect amongst the regulars. This photo from ’76 by Dave Shaw.

Peter Solness ’77

Cronulla photographer Peter Solness was years ahead of his time. While most cameraman focused solely on the action Peter chased out the angles and lighting to capture unique photographs not unlike  what almost every surf photographer does today. His night shots and back lit barrels were cutting edge back in the 70’s. This pic taken for brother Geoffs custom Highlight board model  would not look out of place in today’s advertising. Thats Peter silhouetted on the shoreline. Circa ’77.
