Rob Mc Claggan handcrafted these kneeboard spoons from the Jackson surfboard factory in the 70,s and 80’s. Each spoon was a work of art made from scratch by Rob himself. This shot was taken in May 1979. In the backgound of the photo you can see a rack full of 9’6″ Shane surfskis with the square shaped front and back…they were the curse of the short boarder.Photo and words Tim Vanderlaan.

Tim Vanderlaan is a multi talented surfer who grew up in the family home on the hill overlooking Wanda and Greenhills. From Mal, short-board to his photography Tim has played a huge part in Cronulla’s beach history. This shot of Tim surfing Kirra in ’77 photo courtesy Jackson Surfboards.

Began shaping boards at Jackson Surfboards in ’74. Today he is the current part-owner of Jackos where he continues to produce retro shapes along with more current designs as well as glassing, photo courtesy Jackson.

Herbie shaped under the Huzza Wuzza custom label for surfboard brands like G&S, Waterforce and Emerald and had a strong following around Cronulla. He was a regular standout at The Point and Shark Island in the 70’s and 80’s and had a reputation for charging. He passed away due to health problems in 2006. Froggy Byrne was the longtime shaper at Jackson Surfboards in the 70’s. He eventually moved south to shape for the Byrne Bros in Wollongong. This shot courtesy Jackson Surfboards.

In the 70’s Cronulla surfers owed a lot of thanks to Steve Core who through his photography, Surf magazine and movies gave local riders like the photo he took of Gary Hughes at The Point below a kick start to their surfing careers.

Grant “Grubby” Coulter was one of the Junior sponsored team riders for “Jackson surfboards” along with Dave Still and Michael Jackson when this photo at the Jackson factory was taken in December 1978. And then Grant surfing at Shark island in the early 2000’s both images by Tim Vanderlaan.
