Jack Eden

Jack started taking surf pics in 1958 and unknowingly at the time he was documenting the sport of surfing in Australia like no one else has. His Early images captured all the greats like Nat, Midget, Kevin the Head and Bobby Brown to name just a few. Coming from the Southside the Cronulla boys were often the focus of Jacks lens. Through his magazine Surfabout of which 24 issues were produced Jack was heavily responsible for bringing the local talent some well deserved exposure and also put Aussie surfing on the world map. Brian “Jacko”Jackson.

Jacko is a Cronulla legend, who else has spent the last 50 plus years dedicated to surfing. The Jackson Surfboard factory he opened up in the Sixties is still in the same location today and he is still pumping out quality surfboards. Jacko has been a long supporter of local talent and his dedication to the sport is endless. This pic is of Jacko with his quiver in 1963  courtesy of the Jackson Surfboards photo album.

Bobby Brown Exhibition

 The Bobby Brown Exhibition will be coming to Cronulla in 2011. On exhibition will be Bobby’s original surfboards, timeless photos, classic 16mm and 8mm movies, personal trophies and memorabilia tracking his short but highly successful surfing career. Bobby Brown Memorial Contest

The 1968 issue of Surfing World Volume 10 No 4  featured a rundown of the first Bobby Brown Memorial Contest at Wanda. In a 5 page article it covered the event blow by blow. The waves were 1 metre and fair for the finals and the best of the best Aussie talent were competing.Ted Spencer, Keith Paull, Midget, Kevin Parkinson, Robert Connelly and Frank Latta were left to battle it out in the final heat. It was Farrely who trimmed and nose rode to victory and walked away with a Bobby Brown sculptured trophy.

Mick Brown

Cronulla lost another of its surfing past this month with the death of Mick Brown a regular face amongst the 60’s crew. The following shot taken by Jack Eden at Cronulla Point of Mick appeared in The Pictorial History of Surfing Book. The caption read”Through the nose of his board has been ripped off by the rocks Mick Brown shows beatiful control as he trims through a big wave” RIP.

Baron Surfboards & Frank Latta

Around ’68 this advertisement for a Frank Latta shaped Baron Surfboard appeared in Surfing World Magazine Vol 10 No6.The factory was located at Taren Point and was a off shoot of Peter Clarke Surfboards. The price $98.00

This advertisement for Gordon and Smith appeared in Surfabout Magazine Vol 4 No2. sometime around 1966. It featured Southside legend  Bobby Brown and his Stringerless Model…the sales pitch was its Bold, Daring, Exciting and Fundamental.
