Frank Latta Sandshoes 1964

Frank Latta once tried his hand at proffesional boxing but found out the hard way he was much better suited to surfing and shaping. Especially his local hangout the urchin spine covered reef known as Sandshoes. Franks legend at Shoes is still talked about fondly by the old time locals today. The photo below was by Bob Weeks.

Ledgend  surf photographer Bob Weeks captured many of the  classic surf images of the 60’s  era. This is one of the earliest images of Cronulla Point being tamed in 1961.

Ken “Wheels” Williams ’65

This shot taken by Jack Eden of Ken Williams surfing The Point was one of the best water angle photographs getting around in the sixty’s. With his Da Bull style trunks the photo first appeared in Surfabout in ’65. More images from the same session were featured in the book Pictorial History of Surfing. Check out the wooden Paipo belly board rider getting pitched, a classic image from that era.

Steve Core Surfboards

Steve Core has been in involed in many aspects of surfing including  Surf mags, photography,retail shop and movie producer. Around 1969 to 1970 Steve also dabbled with his own surfboard brand with Frank Latta as head shaper and team rider at Taren Point.

Cronulla Wahines

Store-a-board

Store-a-board shops were popular back in the 60’s and 70’s as they looked after your surfboard for a small weekly charge. It saved all the Westy kids lugging their sticks back home by train every weekend.Wez King used to manage one. This advertisement appeared in Surfabout magazine.
