Wal Carle

Wal Carle had the honor of appearing on the cover of the very first issue Vol 1 No1 of Surfabout Magazine. Wally also ran his surfboard manufacturing business at Grays Point and was a popular board maker for the Cronulla crew in the early days. Below images of Wal.

Ian “Macca” MacDonald

Macca has long been a part of the close knit Sandshoes crew ever since he began surfing in the 60’s. His involvement in surfing goes right back to when his dad Alex owned the first Store-a-board surf shop at where Little Italy restaurant is today. Macca also was secretary for the St George Boardriders Club back in there heyday. Macca is still a keen longboard surfer but has more recently also found his other passion documenting and stoking out the local crew with his videos and photos in what he describes as “Just for Fun”. Below Macca back in ’67 riding his dad Alex’s board and today behind camera at his beloved Shoes.

1963 Surfabout Vol 1 No 5

Jack Edens magazine Surfabout had regular features on Cronulla this issue was no different with  a 3 page article and a front cover on the Soutshide crew featuring Terry Steen, Gary Birsall, Ian Nolan, Jacko and Dave “Cancer”Coppelson from a session at The Point. Bob Weeks paddled out on a board and took the shots from the channel with his Pentax camera and no housing.

The Original Redhouse.

Situated at Elouera Beach the house was washed away in a wild storm early 60’s. In the rare photo below you can see the original building on the right while some guys pose for a pic Circa 40’s or 50’s.

Keith Paull and Peter Clarke Surfboards

Keith Paull was one of the highest profile Aussie surfers of the 60’s moved to Cronulla from the Goldcoast  in ’66 and rode and shaped for Peter Clarke Surfboards until ’68 eventually moving to the Northside factory. This adv from Surfing World in 68.
