One if not the first attempt other than by Body Surfers to have a serious crack at Shark Island in 1968 by Paul “The Bear” Burridge. Eyewitnesses recalled he got flogged and dragged across the reef seconds later.

Lewis Cawsey has been surfing Cronulla Point since 1960 as a body surfer aged 10 and later as a Paipo rider and board rider ever since. Lewis was on the cover of Surfabout Vol 3 No1 with his mate Greg Vaughan as well as appearing in many other mags for Hand-plane surfing and Paipo surfing at the Point.Photo Jack Eden

Originally from the Eastern Suburbs beaches Norm Casey set up shop at Rockdale in the early 60’s and formed a strong connection with the local Cronulla surfers.From Surfabout Magazine.

In the 60’s some of the practices the Surf Clubs participated in at Carnivals were often viewed as old fashioned by the young surfers who were starting to break away from the Club scene. In particular the art of Pillow fighting shown here at North Cronulla in 1964.
