Kev Cassidy

Before Boogs and Jezza began their backhand assault on Shark Island and Banksy was mostly off overseas surfing some exotic reef location Kevin Cassidy was the standout goofyfoot taking on the Islands notorious steps and ledges. Its hard enough front-side when the wall begins to buckle and warp but for Kev the rewards were worth the occasional thumping. This photo taken mid to late 80’s shows Kevin hitting some hurdles the type of which make the Island so challenging, photo by Chris Stroh.

South Cronulla Rockpools

On those rare big cyclone  north swells the outside left that breaks in line with the Rockpools and South Cronulla can produce some heart in your mouth drops. The Voodoo express rip is running at full speed on these days and will suck you towards the horizon if you let it. This shot taken in the early 80’s shows an unknown thrill seeker using a Hawaiian sized gun or Clubbie board to paddle into the maxed out swells. Photo Chris Stroh

Andy King

Posted: April 12, 2012 at 10:26 am

This photo of Andy was taken at Suckrock probably late 90’s or early 2000. Andy was just hitting his peak and was all over the mags and contests riding for SMP clothing. A decade and some earlier Andy just a skinny grommet at the time bought his first surfboard ( a battered old Waterforce) off Craig Stroh. The pair would hook up again in the coming years as it was Craig who took the pic of Kingy below and many others. Such a natural cruiser, loving life in the barrel.

Surfboard Rego

Posted: April 12, 2012 at 10:12 am

Ever  wonder why Clubbies and Surfers have had a long going  rivalry. Back in 1965 Councils enforced surfboard registration at City beaches. Riders had to pay a fee to use their surfboards at the beach. Without an official rego sticker the Clubbies would confiscate your board. This along with early rules of compulsory membership to the clubs for all surfers and putting the flags on the best banks developed conflict and often bad vibes back in the longboard days. That rivalry still exists at some beaches even today.
