This pic of Bob Coligan was snapped at Sandshoes by Steve Core. It appeared in Surfing World aaround ’75. Bob was the driving force at Southern Comfort Surfboards during this time. The new brand attracted plenty of Cronullas hottest rising stars to its factory like Ross Marshall, Craig Naylor and Pete Smith making it the new cool brand. Things went a little crazy when out the backdoor there was some sleazy buisness going on and things got heavy. Danny Childs took over ran the buisness.

Phil Bryant

Posted: May 29, 2012 at 6:59 am

In the mid 70’s the hottest surfers on the Southside seemed to all congregate at Cronulla Point. Names like Jim Banks, Gary Hughes, Popout, Soulman, Glasso, Greg Melhuish all stood out and made names for themselves by charging the notorious 2nd reef waves. While the surfers charged the cameramen like Dave Shaw, Greg Button, Steve Core and Peter Solness captured all the action. Local standouts like Phil Bryant pictured below were so amped on the wave they practically disowned the beachies and refused to lower themselves by surfing anywhere else but at The Point.

One of Cronulla’s orininal crew in the early 60’s. Nigel first started working in the surfboard industry in 1958-59 at Cronulla, . He worked in  with Brian Jackson and Norm Casey, and became a skilled glasser. Terry Tumeth’s reports of good surf and cheap icecream in NZ were enough to convince Nigel it was worthy of a visit. Nigel began to produce boards in an old house in New Plymouth which marked the beginning of Del Surfboards.
