Southies Surf Club boys of the early 50’s. Note The Point headland in the background looking very undeveloped. Interesting enough back in those days riders had their names painted onto their boards. In this photo theres Buck Spencer, Chic Perryman, Barry Regan and John Griffiths.

Back in the early 50’s Charles Perryman was an apprentice baker in the families bakery in Mortdale and as soon as he finished baking the bread in the early hours of the morning he hit Cronulla beach at daylight every morning. Chicka was a member at South Cronulla Surf club. The photos are dated around 1952 to about 1956 and as you can see they were the old hollow pinewood boards. Chicka had an early fibreglass board and was a member of the Greenhills crew in the late fifties early sixities.

Wayne Roach is one of the evergreens of Cronulla surfing. Roachy has been around that long he’s part of the furniture, even though he works in Torquay these days he’s still a Cronulla boy through to the core. Roachy has many tales to tell like this snippet from a recent email. ” I went to Gisbourne 1973 Mum gave me the air fair for my 21st, got a lot of the spots on I was doing a lot of surfing with Mick Peterson at the time he shaped me a filthy stick at Southern Comfort 4the trip to NZ. The board was ahead of its time I glassed it so light the Kiwi’s went burko over it, still got the template”. This pic Roachy at Jan Juc 2006.

PT was a regular sight surfing at The Point and Sandshoes in the mid 70’s. Shaping his board models out of G&S saw the 1976 World Champ hitting the local spots when he wasn’t on tour. These photos were taken in ’78 when the Coke Cola Surfabout rolled into town. It was man on man at The Point. Back in PT’s pink days. Photo Rob King.

1986 at The Pro Junior at Narrabeen two Southside surfers Mark Occilupo and childhood friend Richard Marsh went toe to toe in the final. Both Goofyfoots, both ride for Billabong, both from Kurnell it was a classic showdown. Dog took the first set and Occy came back strong to win the next two and his 2nd Pro Junior crown. At the presso Dog received more than he bargained for when he was given a electric shock when he held the microphone. Photo Waves.

1978 was a big year in the competitive life of Jim Banks. He started the year on top of the world when as a trialist in the Coke Cola Surfabout at Narrabeen Jim managed to knock out MR in there first round main event heat with the help of a 6 second tube ride. He continued his momentum up to the semis where he was defeated by Wayne Lynch. A 3rd place in the worlds richest contest saw young Jim popularity on the rise. He was next thrown a 3 year sponsor deal by The Bronzed Aussies which offered to pay his travel expenses to compete on the rest of the tour. Banks was now Cronullas first pro surfer since Frank Latta moved Northside in the early 70’s. Banks pic from Waves.
