Ross Marshall was part of the Windensea Club which was a new highly competitive crew of local young surfers in the late 70’s .After a drought of competition success Ross an his mates began making inroads on the Northside domination of the contest scene. It was Ross who’s success first inspired the likes of the next generation grommets which included Occy. These days Ross lives up and Kingscliff, still ripping and riding for Kirra Boardriders club along with his son and daughter as well as  working  in the board industry. This shot was taken around Cronulla around 1980 prior to him moving north. Bobby Brown

Posted: October 19, 2012 at 11:15 am

Bobby Brown was the orginal hot dogger in Cronulla in the early 60’s. He was the first to nose ride which at the time was the hottest move a malibu rider could pull. What set Bobby apart from other local riders was his ability in all kinds of waves. He could handle the Point and Voodoo on those big days as well as walk the board and he did it all with style. Underground Surf Magazine.

Posted: October 19, 2012 at 11:10 am

First published around the mid 90’s, Underground Surf was the work of passionate surfer and weather forecaster Ben Horvath. What was so special about U.S was that it was a south-side based and  influenced magazine which gave the local crew a bit of a push. Regularly featured were Terapai, The McKinnleys, Boogs , Rusty and the new kids like Blake Johnston, Flintoff and crew.  This issue Spring ’94 it was Murph on the cover taken by Joli. Since its demise in early 200’s the South-siders once again are too often easily ignored by the current crop of surf publications.

Big Wednesday at Shark Island

Posted: October 19, 2012 at 10:59 am

When the Island or Point pumps the headland acts as a natural arena and it allows the perfect vantage point to watch all the action. Most big swells a large crowd will gather and it creates that Big Wednesday type feel about it. This swell in the early 90’s actually hit on a Wednesday and Chris Iredale was there to make the most of it. Story appeared in  Tracks and photographed by Chris Stroh

The Christian Surfers board club first appeared in 1977 in Cronulla and was the brainchild of Bret Davis. Bret saw the need to improve the image of surfers plus create a club for members of his fellowship. Bret has written a book called Ground Swell that covers the history of the club and it will be released for this Xmas. Photo below features Bret 2nd from left in the centre a young Michael Mackie.

Jack Eden

Posted: October 19, 2012 at 10:29 am

Jack Eden started taking surfing photos in the late 50’s and published 24 issues of Surfabout magazine in the mid sixties, which gave the Southside its first coverage. The first photos of Cronulla Point, Voodoo and Sandshoes opened up the possibilities that the Southside had to offer. Riders like Bobby Brown, Frank Latta and Qld transplant Keith Paull before returning north where  regularily featured. Many of his images captured the sport in what Jack refers to as the golden era of surfboard riding. It was all experimental as there was no guidlines and the surfers back then were making it up as they went. Jack below shows off some of his work  which is like a time capsule and is regularily featured in museums.

Damien Hodge

Posted: October 13, 2012 at 10:01 am

Around ’90 Damien Hodge was the new kid on the block showing plenty of potential in the amateur ranks. Being taken under the wing of Dog and Jason Marsh, Hodgey was one of Cronulla Boardriders Clubs most promising stars and looked like a possible candidate to follow a similar pro career path to that of Greeny , Occy and Dog. In ’95 when this pic was taken by Peter Simons, Hodgey was riding Stuart Patterson shaped Force 9 boards.
