Troy Nugget Dennehy

Nugget is best remembered for being the King of The Alley rip bowl lefts. However when the swell was up it was common to see Nugget at Southies or The Point tearing it up as well. This day taken early 90’s goofy footers Nugget , Murph and Jezza took over the Point lineup and went to town. Photo Chris Stroh

Pikers Hole

The most recent and heaviest reef discovery is Pikers Hole near Kurnell. Although it was surfed in the 70’s by a adventuress small few  it remained virtually riderless until 2000. It rates up there as one of the worlds heaviest slabs. On a big day its like Waimea Shorey in reverse on reef steroids. Photo Craig Stroh.

Cronulla Power

“Play with fire”. More proof of Cronulla’s wave grunt . Of all the beach side areas on the East Coast of Australia I cant think of another strip of coastline  that comes close to the number of  powerful reef waves that can be found around Cronulla Seq by Craig Stroh

Boogs at Suckrock

Posted: January 25, 2013 at 7:59 am

Daryl Boogs Vanderpolder earned a reputation in the 90’s as a fearless big wave charger  around the surfing world. Daryl growing up in The Shire honed his skills surfing Cronulla’s powerful reef waves. Suckrock was one of Boogs favourite  haunts during this time as it was known to serve up some serious wave grunt. Photo Stroh

Voodoo Wave Power

Posted: January 25, 2013 at 7:48 am

When Captain Cook sailed around Bate Bay looking for somewhere safe to land its not surprising he chose to bypass the rocky coastline around Voodoo for the safer and more protected Kurnell just around the corner. Deep sea ocean swells unload on this part of the coast as they hit the shallow ledges producing some intense wave energy. Just North of the car park in large North East swells the ocean power is never more evident as swells collide with the rocky headland. How big is this wave explosion? The person standing there in the shot gives a rough gauge into  just how high this spray is. Photo Stroh.

Greg McCarthy

Posted: January 25, 2013 at 7:31 am

Local photographer Greg McCarthy had been experimenting with different types of remote control radio cameras for quite some time in the 90’s. The problem was at the time it was very expensive and you had to be close enough to the action to reach the signal from shore. With plenty of frustrating hours put in eventually Macca and Dave “Speg” McKinnley eventually connected resulting in taking out a prestigous award winning Canon photo contest and the cover of Tracks Photo Annual in ’98. These days Go Pros have solved those technical problems.

Chris Iredale

Posted: January 20, 2013 at 12:29 pm

As a lifeguard for several decades, Chris Iredale has probably spent more time in and around the waves at Cronulla Beach than anyone else. A red hot surfer in his own right, Chris has spent much of that time inside barrels looking out. This shot of Iredale was taken at The Point around ’79 by Chris Stroh.
