Tim Vanderlaan Camera Board 80’s

Posted: February 8, 2013 at 8:26 am

Tim Vanderlaan is well known around Cronulla for his innovative camera skills and ability on a Mal. Tim began experimenting with homemade camera board built housings in the 80’s here he explains the process.’

“My early 1980’s board cam attempts (pre go pro days) A heavy camera with motor drive, in a even bigger water housing & bolted to the nose of the board, activated by a wire running the length of the board, coiled around the leggie, thro my wettie into a switch in my hand… most times the wire would break as the wire wouldn’t stretch enough with the leg rope resulting in an electrical “short”, a wasted roll of film and being continually zapped by the broken “shorted” wire all the way back to the beach”. Below 2 self portraits using the camera board.

Nugget is best remembered for being the King of The Alley rip bowl lefts. However when the swell was up it was common to see Nugget at Southies or The Point tearing it up as well. This day taken early 90’s goofy footers Nugget , Murph and Jezza took over the Point lineup and went to town. Photo Chris Stroh

Pikers Hole

The most recent and heaviest reef discovery is Pikers Hole near Kurnell. Although it was surfed in the 70’s by a adventuress small few  it remained virtually riderless until 2000. It rates up there as one of the worlds heaviest slabs. On a big day its like Waimea Shorey in reverse on reef steroids. Photo Craig Stroh.

“Play with fire”. More proof of Cronulla’s wave grunt . Of all the beach side areas on the East Coast of Australia I cant think of another strip of coastline  that comes close to the number of  powerful reef waves that can be found around Cronulla Seq by Craig Stroh

Voodoo Wave Power

Posted: January 25, 2013 at 7:48 am

When Captain Cook sailed around Bate Bay looking for somewhere safe to land its not surprising he chose to bypass the rocky coastline around Voodoo for the safer and more protected Kurnell just around the corner. Deep sea ocean swells unload on this part of the coast as they hit the shallow ledges producing some intense wave energy. Just North of the car park in large North East swells the ocean power is never more evident as swells collide with the rocky headland. How big is this wave explosion? The person standing there in the shot gives a rough gauge into  just how high this spray is. Photo Stroh.
