Nelly was one of the first big wave riders in the 50’s. A member of the North Cronulla Surf Club he was well respected for his go outs on big days. Dags remembers Nelly paddling out at Southies all the way to North Cronulla just to catch one big wave to the beach. He would also complain if there was more than 5 surfers out. Below Nelly on his Toothpick board in 1954, Club Junior champion 2nd from left in ’55 and with his Mal in the 60’s when he would cruise the South Coast breaks with his mate Jack Eden.
