Ross pulls in at a spot that rarely gets photographed but is a favourite with those in the know. It may only break properly a few times a year but when it does a core bunch of surfers are right on it. Photo of Ross early 80’s by Chris Stroh

Late 70s and early 80’s Ross Marshall was king of the beach breaks between the Alley and Wanda. With a clean unforced style he took his high performance act to the rest of Australia and was a dominant force in the State and Aussie titles helping to put Cronulla  on the map after a long competitive drought. Midway Boardriders Club was founded in ’66 by Alistair Waddell and was a great club throughout  the  70s. Many of Cronulla’s future stars were Midway members. With contests most months and trips to Ulladulla  plus regular events against other Cronulla clubs and northern beaches crews. By the mid 70’s  the Midway boys were a competitive outfit and making their presence felt at amateur events. Members included Glen Smith, Ross Marshall, Alistair Wadell, Jim Banks. Craig Naylor, Barry Tyte, Dave McPherson, Andrew Ramsay, Steve Way, Peter Smith, Woofo and Smurf to name just a few. Riding for Rip Curl this advertisement shot was taken of Ross Marshall by Dave Shaw in ’82 using a water proof flash. At the time flash water photography was a whole new dimension and Dave was one of the first Aussies along with Peter Crawford to capitalise on its uniqueness.
