Daryl Boogs Vanderpolder earned a reputation in the 90’s as a fearless big wave charger around the surfing world. Daryl growing up in The Shire honed his skills surfing Cronulla’s powerful reef waves. Suckrock was one of Boogs favourite haunts during this time as it was known to serve up some serious wave grunt. Daryl has a rep around Cronulla as a surfer who doesn’t pull back. This shot is No2 in a 8 shot sequnce that he makes. The wave looks more like Pipe or big Ulu rather than a day at Cronulla. Photo Stroh Circa 90’s.

Ever wonder where Daryl got the knickname Boogs from. It was his brother who gave him the title after young Daryl wore a wetsuit with green arms.”Looks like boogies” he remarked and the name has stuck ever since. This Island shot of Boogs on his usual snot green board taken at The Island Circa 2000s.

Boogs was one of Rusty, Sparky and Jeremy Hrbacs big wave sparring partners. It was always a contest to see how far these guys could push themselves in the ocean.Throughout the 90’s when the swell was pumping they would be out there on the horizon chasing the craziest waves they could find. Below Boogs slotted on his backside at Suckrock, photo Stroh.

Boogs charges hard.Hanging out with the likes of Rusty , Sparky, Jezza, Franky and Terra its a given. Whether he’s paddling out to the horizon to surf macking 5th Left, Voodoo, or Shark island you can guarantee he will be pulling into some of the biggest pits of the day. A proud Christian, Boogs is quiet by nature and soft spoken but when the reefs start going double overhead he’s turns into a barrel hungry beast. This shot shows him cranking a hard turn out of the Surge bowl a difficult feat on your backside . Photo Craig Stroh.
