Whenever The Point is firing you can count on well known surfers turning up from near and far to sample its barrels. On this day the stylish Richard Cram from Bondi rocked up and gave a spectacular performance. Photo Stroh Circa 80’s.

The “Rolf Rotten” name first went public in a Surfing World story by Peter Simons who captured this pic of Point heavy Rolf Myers screaming out of a Second Reef barrel. During his reign in the 70’s Rolf had all the grommets scared stiff to surf the Point and if you did you risked being in his firing line. He’d either run you over, push you over the falls or just fade you in the pit. When he paddled out his reputation alone could clear the break of non regulars.

For 1963 this photo was pretty rad, with local hottie Lance Fisher pulling into a nice sized Point wave. The shot was captured by Bob Weeks.

When its big Cronulla Point is not an easy place to surf. The takeoff can be vertical as the waves jack as the swells hit 2nd reef and the bottom half of the wave disappears as you scramble to your feet. Even harder (unless your Jim Banks) on your backside like this uknown surfer is about to find out. After taking this pic as the guy nose dived,I ducked under the surface and could hear his board breaking loudly in two on impact under the waves. Photo taken around ‘late 70’s by Stroh.

Mid 70’s Gary Hughes was the rising star at Cronulla Point, taking off deep and charging the heaviest barrels Cronulla’s reefs could serve up. Peter Simmons was the instigator on this Hughsey profile which appeared in Surfing World giving the young local talent some well earned publicity. In the latest issue Aug 2011 Tracks theres a shot and brief writeup about Gazza still ripping it up in Puerto Escondido. Pics by Simmo

Dave Shaw best known for his water photgraphy throughout the 70’s was also an accomplished waterman whether bodysurfing, mat riding or boogie boarding. On the biggest Point days Dave was deep amongst it with the rest of the Point heirachy. This shot from the pages of Tracks Nov 86, taking the drop at 2nd Reef by Stroh.

After a near fatal wipeout in Hawaii at Sunset , Gary Hughes was speared in the top of the head by another surfers loose board. He was forced to wear a helmet for a while to prevent further injury plus he had a metal plate inserted into his skull. Not to be detered Gazza was soon back out there when this shot by Dave Shaw was taken at The Point in the late 70’s.

Throughout the 70’s The Point was Cronulla’s most celebrated wave. It attracted all the big wave riders in the area and the local crew were a tight knit bunch. This image was from a issue of Surfing World Vol 24 No 2 in a story written and photographed by Peter Simmons on Cronulla. The shot captured many of the regular faces of that era including Greg Brissendon, Dave Shaw, Gary Hughes, Peter Glasson, The Bear, Rolf Myers and friends.

This shot of Greg Melhuish a well respected surferand shaper for G&S appeared on the cover of Surfing World Vol 25 No5 taken at The Point by Greg Button in 1977. Butto was a regular out the Point and Island charging on his kneelo but always found the time to snap off some deep action water shots around this time. Butto along with Dave Shaw in the 70’s put Cronulla on the surfing map as well as introduce many of The Shires top waves and riders to outside of the area.
