Not 100% sure who this rider is but it looks a lot like Gerry “Popout’ Manion, he’s definitely screaming off the bottom on a size-able Point day in the 90’s.

Underground surfers like Justin Lawton are often out at the Island on the most days, not for the glory, just for the hell of it.

Mick Hatzis at The Point on a beautiful spring day circa 1975. Mick lived near The Point and was a very close friend with Chook, Luke and Popout from the age of 15 to 18. He worked at G&S sanding and glassing. Ross Longbottom was his boss and the best one he ever had according to Micky. The shot was taken by Graham Cassidy.

Les Martin was one of the new kids at The Point when this shot was snapped by Peter Solness around ’76. Along with the White Brothers, Popout, Gary Hughes and Matt Woodcock, the new kids were fearless. Les was a standout at both macking Point and Shark Island. From a Surfing World story on Cronulla.

Peter Simons captured many of the classic images from around Cronulla in the 70’s when at the time he was supposed to be managing the G&S Surf Shop on the Kingsway instead of gallivanting around the beach. Fellow photographer Steve Core reckons it was Simo who inspired him to get fully into taking pics as well as taking advantage of his hospitality by using Simo’s’ dark room. This Simo image taken in the mid 70’s of Jeff Day a regular bearded face at The Point shows the headland hasn’t changed much in all those years.

In the 70’s The Point was the place to be seen and it was the centre of attention in Cronulla. Dave George was one of the regulars captured here by Dave Shaw mid 70’s.
