Greg was a lot like Gerry Lopez. He didn’t do a hell of a lot of tricks on a wave but he made it look good just pulling in and he could ride the barrel as good as anyone else at The Point. This pic taken with my Nikonos was shot on a cloudy day as Greg lines up the next section. Photo Chris Stroh ’78.

A lot of the older crew reckon the Point doesn’t break as good as it use to. Less sand in the bay, more seaweed on the bottom and less quality south swells are a few of the reasons given. Maybe its a case of only remembering all the good days. This shot taken around 2010 proves that the Point can still produce the goods.

From the pages of Steve Cores “Surf Magazine” that was around in the late 70’s. Gary Hughes carving for Dave Shaw’s camera lens. Core’s mag was chock full of Cronulla based riders and waves and it gave the Southside some much deserved recognition and a breath of fresh air rather than the usual Northside push in all the other Oz publications at the time.

There’s few other Aussie areas that can claim the raw reef power that the Cronulla beach area boasts. From Solander to Sandshoes there lies some of Australia’s heaviest waves. Reefs like Pikers, Suckrock, Voodoo, The Reefs, The Point, The Island and Windy are responsible for The Shires reputation for producing big wave chargers. On any swell you can luck into one of the heaviest barrels right here in your own backyard. Below you wont get barrels like this at Bondi, unknown pitted at The Point around ’09 .
