Mark Ryan earned a solid reputation in the 90’s for his tube riding and charging at The Point and Shark Island. He always had the knack of being in the right place at the right time . Mark also kept the local Skaters happy when he opened Vert X indoor SK8 park at Taren Point. Below Mark ,deep throat shot Circa ’90 photo by Chris Stroh

1975 this G&S advertisement appeared in Surfing World magazine. It featured some pretty impressive shapers for the time like PT, Alan Blythe, Terry Bishop, Steve Griffiths, Robert Connely, Peter Glasson and Bob “Mr Moonbean” Liddell.

Local scribe Graham Cassidy stirred up some controversy when he reported in the December 79 issue of Tracks the Government and Local Councils plan to build a 300 metre concrete break wall in the middle of the beach just south off Elouera clubhouse to combat sand erosion. The positive was the fact that the new groyne could maybe offer Kirra like tubes. The negative was how ugly it would look. Nobody apart from the land owners really cared about the real estate in Prince St that was being threatened by the erosion. The plan was later scrapped.

Two of The Points most consistent standouts in the 70’s were the two Gregs. Greg Melhuish on the left was known for his clean style and his even cleaner G&S shapes. Greg McMaster on the right was your local charger. Nothing flash just balls to the wall, pull into the biggest and meanest tubes that 2nd reef could throw up . Both photos were taken by one of the best water photographers of the time Dave Shaw who when he wasnt snapping away was charging hard on his surf mat.

EBC Pressos were always a blast in the eighties. From fancy dress to mosh pits , flushing the heads of grommets and regular chest slamming on the dance floor. This pic is of Elouera heavy weight Andrew “Lips” Linegar getting into it while friend Sue looks on. Mick Moylan is in the background. Photo early to mid 80s by Stroh

The image of Greeny on his Force 9 with the black deck print design was a regular feature in the surfing mags of the eighties. This cover shot appeared in Surfing World Issue 196. He loves a beer and a lip to hit.

Growing up at Cronulla Murph was a talented kid. Whether he was designing his Waxhead clothing label or hitting the lip he never did anything half hearted. Banksy took him under his wing on his travels to Indo and to the desert and when Murph returned he had a new big wave appreciation and began powering at Voodoo and carving up the beachies. Ross Marshall and Craig Naylor two of Cronullas hottest riders around the late 70’s scored when the Surfing World crew took them south on a surf photo mission. The result was a huge feature in the SW Annual Vol 7. Ross made the cover and his sunglasses were cut out. Many of the pics were snapped at Blackrock where Craig excelled in the barrel on his forehand. The boys scored big time.

Gary Green gave up a solid career as a pro surfer to become one of the sports first sponsored soulman riders. This pic was snapped at one of Greenys favourite hangouts called Blackrock. He has the place wired and is one of the best tube riders to ever grace its perfect shaped barrels. Casual and stylish as always in the pit. Circa mid 80’s photo by Chris Stroh
