Grant “Grub”Coulter.

Posted: November 17, 2010 at 12:28 am

Grub is another one of those local shredders who have been around forever. Back in 79 he was apart of Cronulla Junior Board riders club  and competed that same year in the Aussie titles at Merewether. Since those early days Grant has concentrated on his free surfing and has proven himself countless times on Cronulla’s heaviest reefs on the best days standing out from the pack. This shot taken at The Point around 1990 shows Grubs stylish carving cutback. pic by Chris Stroh

EBC Club T’Shirt

Posted: November 17, 2010 at 12:23 am

Check out this fluro number from the colourful 80’s. Remember this was the same era that gave us Prince , Billy Idol and hair bands like Motley Crew. This was the EBC club tshirt around ’88 and it was designed by the late Andrew Murphy when he was right into his Waxhead label.

Jon Frank

Posted: November 17, 2010 at 12:14 am

Cronulla has produced a lot of great surf photographers over the years and its probaly due to the quality of the reef waves in the area. Names like Jack Eden, Peter Solness, Steve Core, Peter Simons, Dave Shaw, Greg Button, Tim V, Greg Macca, Sarge, John Veage and  Shorty are just a few who have stoked us with there wave work in the past. More recently Jon Frank has taken his surf art and photography to a new level. While these days he travels the world for Rip Curl he did learn his trade at Cronulla. Pic below of the multi talented Mr Frank surfing Suckrock by Chris Stroh Circa 90’s.

Bob Liddell “Mr Moonbeam”

Posted: November 17, 2010 at 12:02 am

Peter Simons pays tribute to his Cronulla mate Bob Liddell one of the areas best shapers in this Tracks writeup in Feb 83. Working under the Moonbeam logo and a former G&S shaper  Bob was a popular guy  around Cronulla and a great loss to the community.

Southern Comfort Surfboards

Posted: November 16, 2010 at 11:46 pm

Southern Comfort Surfboards kept the local crew happy with there clean lines and cutting edge shapes back in the 70’s. Denny Childs the hot local goofyfoot and wild child was head shaper when this adv. ran in the Tracks issue 51 in ’74. The factory ended up going out of business when the owners were busted for a large narcotic importation racket involving flight stewards. While the surfboards were going out the front door stoking the groms ,seedy stuff was going on out the backdoor. Thats Denny in the photo.

Occy Cover ’88

Posted: November 14, 2010 at 10:32 am

This Island barrel shot of Occy was on the cover of Nov/Dec Waves magazine in ’88. It was part of a 5 shot sequence. Its one of my favourite photographs for 2 reasons. I remember seeing  Occy take off inside so I swam pretty deep to make sure I didnt miss any of it. To deep in fact, I ended up getting sucked back over and dragged across the reef. When I came up I was on the otherside of the Island. At least I scored the cover with it and that was my first real Island shakedown, but it was worth it.   photo Chris Stroh

Chris Iredale

Posted: November 14, 2010 at 10:22 am

Throughout the 80’s and 90’s whenever Shark Island was big mean and double sucking Chris Iredale always seemed to manage to find the biggest and best barrel of the day. He would pull in across Whiterock and just stand there like it was nothing at all as Surge opened up inside like Jenolan Caves. Sometimes the reef behind him would be warping and bending but he casually just rode it out rarely wiping out. This pic of Chris was taken by Greg Button one of the best water photographers around that time. It appeared in Surfing World Annual 8 in ’83. Two Island legends  in the right place at the right time resulted in a timeless Island moment.
