Greg Meluish during his time shaping at G & S was well respected in the industry in the 70’s. Greg was just as well respected for his surfing ability. Melhuish was always a standard out at The Point when the waves got big and round and was featured in many of the mags during that time. This shot by taken in the late 70’s appeared in the Surfing World Issue 171 and was snapped by Dave Shaw

Ferret was part of the Craig Naylor , Ross Marshall and Pete Smith crew. His brother Rob was a ripper as well. There was a whole group of these kids tearing up the beachies in the late ’70s. For years all the focus had been on The Point but when this new wave of hell groms hit, rip , tear and lacerate style performance surfing took over. Ferret slash by Rob King ’78.

When Occy won the Pro Junior at Narrabeen he had already established himself as the new rising star of Aussie surfing. Occy was our secret weapon to beat Tom Curren on the world stage. Riding a Wayne Roach shape he never looked like losing in the 3ft Narrabeen lefts. Other finalists included Mark Sainsbury and his Kurnell best mate Richard Marsh who would also claim Australia’s most prestige’s Junior title as well a year or two later. Occy speech photo Stroh

Surfabout Magazine was the work of local 60’s surf photographer Jack Eden.In the early days the Southside lacked exposure as all the surf media was based Northside. Jack changed all that and through the golden 60’s many cronulla surfers gained well deserved recognition. This arty cover was Vol 3 No 6.

Evergreen ripper Craig Naylor is still as keen today as he was when this pic was taken back in ’78 when he ventured south to Blackrock with the Southern Comfort team. The infamous Aussie Pipe was second home to Cronullas hottest Goofies over the years. Photo by Rob King.

Everyone loves a Point wipeout when the waves are pumping. In the old days the headland was packed to the max with every blade of grass covered and the crowd used to hoot the best rides. Even the boaties would try there luck as well in the big swells. On this day in January 1978 the Clubbie boys got hammered as they took off and got smashed. Photo by Rob King
