Gerry “Popout” Manion

Posted: December 21, 2010 at 5:15 pm

Everyone who surfs the Island regularily takes a pounding, even Kelly Slater. Its the nature of the wave, some are perfect barrels and others are mutant ledging beasts that rip boards out from under the most experienced. Guess thats why when you make a gaping tube out there the rush is better than anything. One of the most experienced and go for it chargers in the 70’s and early 80’s was Popout. Gerry was fearless taking on anything the ocean would throw at him. This pic appeared in Surfing Mag in 1980 taken by local photo legend Dave Shaw showing Popout about to cop a solid thrashing on the unforgiving reef.

Stuart Gooch

Posted: December 21, 2010 at 4:58 pm

Gooch is one of those natural talented surfers who could have taken his surfing much further had he wanted to. In ’91 he was EBC Club champion then in ’92 and ’95 he was CBC Open Champ. Also in ’91 Gooch entered the history books winning the Alley Masters event. Instead of chasing the Pro dream Gooch saved his best for his free surfing sessions along the beachies at home. Today Gooch is still ripping just as hard as always. Water angle  photo Craig Stroh late 90’s.

Len Thick

Posted: December 21, 2010 at 4:41 pm

In 1993 Tracks ran a feature on Len Thick who at 75 years of age was described as Cronulla’s oldest grom. Len was a common site at Cronulla surfing his mal at The Point or up the beach on a daily basis easily recognisable by his white hat. Len began surfing in the 60’s at age 45 and has rarely missed a day when these images were taken. Photos by John Veage.
