Bruce “The Fox” Hennessy

Posted: January 31, 2011 at 11:15 am

Bruce Hennessy alias The Fox started surfing, ie. riding a board, in 1959, he was 13 and used to knock off the boards the “clubbies” kept in the Nth Cronulla surf club.  A bloke named Terry Mcintosh taught him how to ride and he used to hang out with the ORIGINAL Cronulla gang at what is now known as South Cronulla . Brian Jackson and Nigel Dwyer were his mentors in the early days, Bruce went through all the eras of surfing and was lucky enough to have a great job at the sun-herald newspaper that gave him  heaps of time to surf   (thats where he met Graham Cassidy)  He worked at Jacko’s factory for nearly 12 years  and used to train at the gym with Frank Latta. Bruce saw the rise and fall of Northie’s  and worked on building sites with Bobby Brown (and blond bob as well) He is One of Cronulla’s original legends. Old Joes Milkbar

Posted: January 30, 2011 at 5:34 pm

Old Joes Milkbar was for a longtime a major part of Cronulla history. Situated right on the beach at Northies it was the hang for all the crew. Run by Joe and Thelma it had old Nat surf posters and ancient Tab Cola advertisements hanging up on fly stained walls. Out dated penny arcade machines alongside newer style pinballs, it was sad to see it go along with the Workers Club next door. Image by Chris Stroh

A longtime Alley local Patch has been a fixture down at Northies since the late 80’s. When he was not thrashing it out in his Punk band he was a regular out at the Alley Rip Bowl. Patch and his Sharky board artwork image by Craig Stroh.

This advertisement for Peter Clarke Surfboards appeared in Surfabout Magazine in the mid 60’s. Advertisement back then was very basic when compared today’s more loud, colourful and  in your face style.

Poo March

Posted: January 28, 2011 at 9:32 am

During the 80’s water pollution at Sydney beaches was a serious health issue due to the ocean outfalls pumping raw sewerage into the sea. Whenever a Northeaster hit Cronulla became toxic. Someone once said,”You can shit one in the morning and surf with it later in the day”. The Poo March was an organised protest that gathered together, Tree Huggers , Surfers, ecologists and anyone who wanted the ocean cleaned up. It became an annual event for  a while with protesters marching along the Cronulla beach front and earning a lot of negative publicity for the Goverment.
