In the 60’s and 70’s Surfers and Lifeguards were enemies. The long haired Surfie bums versus the clean cut scungy wearing lawmen who would place there flags on the best bank and mow down the surfers with their Clubbie boats. Today Lifeguards like Scotty Yealland have bridged the gap showing that the rivalry that once existed is now a thing of the past. Here’s Scotty checking the roof of this Island tube for leaks . During the 70, 80’s and 90’s Butto was one of Cronulla’s top water photographers. It was Gregs shot of Gerry Manion at The Point that introduced the surf world to Cronulla’s ample wave power. Besides photography Butto was also pretty skilled and riding his kneelo and was a regular pulling in at The Point and Island. This shot of Butto was taken at The Point in the late 70’s by Chris Stroh

The first Bobby Brown Memorial event was held in 1968 and was won by Midget. The following year Frank Latta the local hero took top honors. Then  it was Qld hot rat Andrew McKinnon who stole the show when he beat Frank, Paul Neilsen and Baddy Treloar in small beachies at Wanda the following year. Heres the much desired first place trophy Andy walked away with. Pic by Pegus as seen in Deep.

Cronulla has its fair share of powerful hollow barrels. Some of these reefs break way out on the horizon where only the fearless dare to go. Jeremy Hrbac is one local who doesn’t mind a challenge. Pic below offshore reef shot taken of Jezza hooking in around 1990 by Chris Stroh
