Popout

Posted: April 11, 2011 at 1:21 pm

Gerry “Popout” Manion’s performances on big days at The Point were the talk of the town in the late 70’s. Popout was an animal when it came to taking the biggest and heaviest sets. Not sure where the name Popout came from but in the early 70’s the first cheap mass produced machine moulded surfboards appeared on the surfing scene and they were called Popouts, maybe there’s a connection. This shot was taken in the early 80’s on his Waterforce gun typified his steely determined approach to riding Second Reef. Pic Chris Stroh.

Southside Open ’80

Posted: April 11, 2011 at 1:12 pm

The Southside Open was the first of a succession of big pro events to be held at Cronulla throughout the eighties. The brainchild of Sid Cassidy it attracted the best riders from all around the world. As usual the beachies were small and crappy and Rabbit pocketed $10,000 for the win and was awarded the cheque by Neville Wran the then NSW Premier. Photos by Crawford.

Gary Green and Cronulla photographer Peter Simmons were a formidable team when it came to getting the “money shot.” This Blackrock tube ended up as a double spread in Surfing Mag and then a Piping Hot poster in ’84. Note the camouflage wetty. Pic Simmo.

Occy on his first year on the world tour  in 1984 hooks up with Rusty Surfboards. Its a deadly combination that sees  Occy put the fear into all the other competitors as the next big thing. This pic snapped at one of Northies red brick units by Peter Simmons.
