Around 1962 Gary Birdsall was one of Cronulla’s first and finest surfers and photographer Bob Weekes snapped a shot of Gary charging on a sizeable day at Cronulla Point. The image ended up on the cover of the 60’s surf band The Atlantics record album called Bombora. Below is the shot and cover now a collectors item signed by Birdsall.

Shot during a classic Island swell in March 1980. Mark “Froggo”Malloy paddled into this Island pit on a 5ft 10” Sky wide stubby single fin. Seconds after this photo was snapped his board which was way to short ran out of steam and he got sucked up and over and pulverised by the lip. It was the worst wipeout of his surfing career but a memorable one. Photo Chris Stroh .

It was in March 1980 when the ocean served up a massive easterly swell. It was overcast and rainy which made it look ever scarier than it was. The Island was maxing out but still ride able in between the closeout sets. Jim Banks was easily the standout amongst only a handful of takers. Banksy rode one of his Hawaiian guns and wrote a story about the day in Tracks which stirred up a bit of controversy with a few jealous locals. This shot by Peter Simons was from that day.

This pic of Occy was taken around ’84 when he was just starting to make an impact on the world of surfing. The day was classic 1 to 2 metre Blackrock offshore and sunny. Dog, Rob Bain and Sean Charters were out as well making it an all star session. Occy was killing it and showing the form of a future threat to Tom Currens World title domination. Pic Dave Kelly.

1990 Michael Mackie hits his head while surfing Pink Rocks on the South Coast and is knocked unconcious. Luckily Craig Naylor was on hand to help pull Mick from the sea in what was a close call. From the pages of Tracks pic Chris Stroh
