Sandshoes was the place of pace back in the 70’s. Riders like Frank Latta, Reno, PT, Steve Griffiths, Steve Anastas, Steve Core , Graham Cassidy and a bunch of other talented surfers called it home. Peter Simmons snapped these shots back in ’76 for Surfing World. Top 2 pics are Frank Latta and main shot Emerald owner/shaper Steve Griffiths.

Night surfing came to town in 84 at the Beaurapaires event. The worlds best battled it out under massive floodlights brought in for the occasion unfortunately the waves didnt co operate and the night surfing was barred from future events because of crowd problems with local residents. This shot Tom Curren taken byPeter Crawford from Waves Mag.

Many people with long memories still believe Pete Smith from the Animal days in the 70’s was one of the hottest surfers to ever ride the waves at Cronulla . He was right up there with Bobby Brown and Occy in talent, he is still sadly missed. Photo Rob King ’78.

This shot of Boat Harbour was taken in the early 90’s. The huts originally were built in the depression days of the 30’s when squatters took refuge in the dunes to live off the land and ocean.Years later the original families were given a 100 year lease before the land is meant to be handed back. Having a friend or relo who owned a hut was always a bonus for the surfers who ventured out to the nearby reefs and beachies. Image Stroh files.
