Jack Eden RIP

Back in the late 60s I had my first introduction to surf photography. In the school library was a book titled “A Pictorial History of Surfing”. Inside was packed with Jack Edens classic surf shots. His images inspired me to buy my own gear and set out on my own surf photo addiction and 50 years later im still obsessed. Thanks Jack your work inspired me and countless other photographers and it was sad to hear of your passing. You’ve left us with a treasure chest of iconic surf images which will now last on forever. Jack you are a legend RIP.

The Power & The Glory

Huge surf at Cronulla Point in 1974. Peter Glasson wrote a piece in the 1974 Surfing World Magazine called The Power & The Glory of the day he and his mates surfed huge waves that battered the Cronulla coast. As a kid I was standing on the rocks in total awe these guys, in one of my first ever surf pictures shot with a Kodak Instamatic camera. I wonder if this image is in fact Peter riding on that day. The 2SM Coca-Cola Surfabout Competition at North Narrabeen in March 1981 where Cronulla’s Jim Banks caught one of the best barrels of the comp. Jim surfed against Newcastles Col Smith in Heat 10 of Round 1. The comp was eventually won by Simon Anderson on his newly invented 3 fin thruster. Tim Vanderlaan Photo
