Farewell To Beaver

Posted: November 24, 2011 at 8:01 pm

November 2011 was a time of great sorrow. Former Kurnell kid Brett Shweickle better known as Beaver sadly passed away. One of Occy’s buddies Beaver grew up with the Kurnell crew surfing the Point as well as competing for CBC in the 80’s. Beaver was another of the popular hometown heroes who up to only a few months ago was diganosed with cancer . A huge turnout of friends including Richard Maurer, Camo, Veage, Darcy and Occy had a paddle-out at Kurnell for their mate where his ashes were sent a drift as he requested. He will be forever missed by his many friends and deepest condolences to his wife and kids. This shot of Beaver at The Island was taken early 90’s by Chris Stroh.

Store-a-board

Store-a-board shops were popular back in the 60’s and 70’s as they looked after your surfboard for a small weekly charge. It saved all the Westy kids lugging their sticks back home by train every weekend.Wez King used to manage one. This advertisement appeared in Surfabout magazine.

The Bear as he was known around the beaches of Cronulla was a bit of a hometown hero. Rob was one of the founding members of Cronulla Point Boardriders and was a regular fixture in the lineup every pumping swell. In 1994 to the shock of friends the ever bubbly and popular Bear took his own life. The very next day the swell pumped. The photo below was from a Surfing Life story dedicated to Bear. Rip.

Harey is one of those underground chargers that can be  usually found at every heavy wave spot whenever its going off.  Back around the time this was taken at Shark Island, Harey reckons that I only ever seemed to snap him getting worked. Well here ya go . Late 80’s by Stroh
